Steppas Choice 74: Unfinished & C4TR
A long time ago I did an Interview with Unfinished. And this is the perfect occasion to post it! So here we go for the second interview on steppaschoice.blogspot.com
• Name:
Unfinished
• Representing:
Nur sound
• Based / Home?
Bern, Switzerland
• How did you get into music?
I don’t really know how I got into it, but I sure can’t find a way out. I’ve listened to a lot of different types of music over the years and can’t stop myself from looking for fresh and exciting stuff.
• What’s your story?
I got a couple chapters written so far; don’t really know where it’s going to lead. A lot of threads have been spun, plots and subplots woven, but the final pattern isn’t totally clear to see yet. I’m sure there’s a couple of surprises around the corner though.
• How long have you been producing music?
I think I started more intensively playing around with production software in 2000 or 2001. I was mostly doing stuff somewhere between reggae and Hip Hop then. I started working on some Dubstep inspired stuff in summer 2006.

• How long have you been djing?
The first time I got in contact with djing at all was in 95 when I got into some techno, I was 13 then. A mate and me each saved up the money for one belt-drive deck each plus a cheap mixer and we were rolling. That stuff only kept me fascinated for about two years. I liked mixing, but didn’t really know the music to keep me going with and I turned to playing more guitar and listening to more rock and all kinds of stuff.
In 2000 I think I started buying vinyl again, now mostly Hip Hop, some reggae, but also some downbeatish things, some jungle, broken beats, a little 2-step, blues, jazz… whatever music I liked. In March 2006 I ran into Dubstep and it did a lot for me somehow. It’s just all the music I like brought into one thing that just twists and turns all through you while you’re dancing. I just love mixing that stuff more than any other music, because it has so many different faces and shapes. Also, through that sound, I got to meet a lot of awesome people who have been extremely important to me over the last two years and have helped me a lot, you know who you are.
• Biggest tune so far?
Hm, many… among them something by Jimi Hendrix, by Björk and by Bob Marley. Keith Jarrett’s Köln Concert, Mala – Blue Notez… oh and Skream – Bahl Fwd
• What inspires or influences you?
Nothing doesn’t

• What track would you most like to have written?
Some crappy pop song earning me lots of royalties making more of the good stuff possible maybe. Or maybe not.
• Who is your favourite DJ / Producer and why?
Can’t name just one, sorry.
• Who has been the most supportive of you or your production?
Your mama, haha. No seriously, thank you for your support C4TR, and thank you Swiss Dubstep massive and my flatmates JA!
• Weapon of Choice:
Vinyl (Sound waves would be nice too, but I thought of vinyl first, so…)

• What event would you most like to play at and why?
fwd> because that’s where I heard it for real, on system for the first time. Or some weird little outdoors rave somewhere in summer with a big system. Basically any big system is great, because of its bigness.
• What’s been the most memorable experience of your career so far?
Hahaha carreer haha, no seriously, I guess seeing the Video of the Kommando Trash gig must be it.
• What is this Kommando Trash sideproject of yours?
Kommando Trash is actually not my project, I did some additional production on their third album Bimml’s Not Dead Ja! and on the first Ze Groupies album. Kommando Trash was actually founded by Flat Fredrik from east west Germany and 70’s Pornstar Pavid Didler. Back in 1987, when I did that stuff on Bimml’s Not Dead Ja! I was only 5 years old, it was quite an experience…
A lot of information on Kommando Trash can be found on
Bimmele Homepage JA!
Bimmele on Virb
Spiegelkiste on Blogspot
JA!
• Proudest moment to date:
Poo on the potty on my own for the first time. Nothing beats that!
• What’s your poison?
One is sticky and green. Another is cute and female. But I guess whatever makes you want too much can become poisonous.
• What’s your ideal night out?
Good, friendly people and big bass. Or tons of drinks in some bar without a name on a Tuesday for no reason at all.

• What’s the best studio advice you’ve been given?
Don’t make stuff go into the red.
• What’s your best studio advice?
Do what you feel.
• What’s next for you?
Going to the see the dentist. I wanna make more beats definitely and play out a bit. And work, make some money. Oh yeah I’m also working on some tunes on my guitar.
• What does the future hold?
Only the future knows.
• What’s the first thing that comes into your mind when you hear the following words:
Green: Pink
Blue: Blues
Pink: Green
Yellow: The Sun
Black: Hole Sun, by Soundgarden, I liked that track…
• Famous last words?
I think that’s long enough. Big up C4TR!

Steppas Choice 73: Deadbybeats & C4TR
Oh my gosh! 19 Shows since he last appeared! It was definitively time for Deadbybeats to step up and take hold of some playtime on Steppas Choice!
And as usual he did a great job! He would probably describe his mix as a mash up of Dubstep Tunes with an influence of Grindstep and Broken Bass just to come up with his final conclusion: whatever you call it, it will always be some bass hefty, broken Music, ranging between 135 to 145 Bpm with a lot of Sub Pressure… usual Bass Madness, seen!
Big up to Deadbybeats! It’s good to have you in the Show!

For the first time I played a tune by Unfinished called “Seek’n’Find” – a proper dubby bass spanker – and the Bass Pressure in the studio was ridiculous! Later, when listening back to the show I realized that this track is probably not so suitable for a Radio Show. It’s nearly quiet when the Sub plays his little solo! But this track on a proper system will tear the roof off! Big up Unfinished!

Dealing with Technical Difficulties

Dealing with Technical Difficulties
Once again dealt with technical difficulties on a Monday Night. Bloody Hell! I already know that the stream wouldn’t work when I arrived there. I got used to check the links on Mondays before I leave for the show to see if we’re “On Air” and if all systems are good to go.
Arriving in the Studio I met Jazzy5 who did his usual Monday Afternoon Rap Show without knowing that the stream was broken. And, what a pleasant surprise, Mister Moanin’ was there contributing one of his legendary Apéro Hardcore Jazz Shows. Beni Moanin’ was also there streaming into the waste nothingness of a harddisk.
At least I knew in advance that my Show would be a silent one, one for the records to put online on a later date.

So happily ever after I prepared myself for a set of smashing brand new spankers… just to find myself swearing at a bloody CD-DJ Player, which refused to accept any of my CD’s (Big up all true Bass Lovers who only play Vinyl’s and never face such problems!). So after my Tunes kept skipping in and out… got me really frustrated and after I tried for 20min I gave up and went home. Bloody CD-DJ’s!

In the next days the problem with the stream got fixed (Big Up Radio Radius Technical Support!) and I went back to the Studio with new CD’s, freshly burnt ones, burnt in a new up to date external DVD/CD Burner, ‘cause my Laptop one seems to have some difficulties… or at least I thought so…
In the Studio the Problem still occurs also with the new ones! For all those who hated my sets: Lucky you! There won’t be any C4TR in the hot seat or behind the ones and twos sets for a while! For all those who did like a couple of new tunes mashed together by me, myself and I, I’m very sorry to tell you that at the moment I’m not able to deliver you the bass tasty freshness…

As you can see in this Blog at least the trip to Zurich and back was worth to take. Loads of colourful steel on the way in the system! I even saw more than I could get hold of with my camera. And I love rolling steel!
Also I did kind of a replacement show with the computer based Mixing System on the Radio Radius Studio Computer. Quiet messy… had some troubles to understand it…
Therefore I will post here not only the three mixes resulting from my afternoon sessions at the Radio Radius Studio, but also some mixes that I found matches these summer days. So let’s go into it…
Twende!

As I said this three mixes from the afternoon session are messy. Listen to it at your own risk!

Well, actually I started with some Golden Age Rap Tunes just to find out that actually I would like to listen to some UK Garage/2Step. Perfect Sound for a sunny day and a cool drink! Bass for the Rude Bwoys – Sweet Melodies and Vocals for the Ladies! At the end of the Show I got quickly into a mix by DJ Sybs. One of my favourite UK Garage/2Step Mixes ever! Absolute lovely! Big up DJ Sybs!
I didn’t play all of it… But no worries you will get the entire, sweet’n’bassy, seductive mix here, just continue reading…

You migth have heard one or two tunes from him in DJ Ruzann’s Set on the Big Bad Bass BBQ Show…
Big up Cheebs on this!

Or just visit Rinse FM on a regular base to download the latest sets. And anyway, it is always a good idea to tune in; most of the sounds they play are outstanding and matching my taste! Big up the Rinse Famo.
Anyway all the shows I listened to, were outstanding (as usual, but still a bit better). Especially the Youngsta Set on Thursday and the N-Type b2b Youngsta with SP:MC b2b Toast Set on Tuesday.
But what really blow my mind was the recorded show that was streamed after the N-Type Show.
Kode9 on decks and Wiley on the Mic.
And trust me, Wiley is going wild on Mic; you can really hear the fun they have and the enthusiasm of both of them. If I’m not completely mistaken this Show was recorded sometime in January/beginning of February (this for sure) in 2003. If so… well, anyway just listen to the tracks Kode9 drops in his set and remember if it’s really 2003 some of the tunes that came out this year are quiet old…
Anyway I heard it and it took my about a minute to start my recording equipment.
So here for your listening pleasure:

Steppas Choice 79: Broods & C4TR troubled by technical Difficulties

Oh Bwoy what a night…
Tuned in short before I left the flat for the usual Monday Night Bassquake and could already tell something was wrong…
…MP3 / iTunes Stream was dead. So on the way to Zurich I wrote to David “I will fix it” from the Radio Radius Crew a short e-mail. Still hoping that all the other streams were working I announced the technical difficulties on steppaschoice.blogspot.com (Bless the iPhone) straight out of the train on the way to Zurich. Optimistic as I was I thought listening to the Show by using the VLC Player and the ogg-Stream would be a good solution…
During the first ten minutes the shoutbox was going wild with complains that there was no stream… Again I wrote to the Technical Support and tried everything to contact him for a fast solution of the problem: Serve the Steppas some delicious Bass! (And trust me, Broods is more than able to do so! Big up Broods!). And of course I restarted everything restartable twice… But we couldn’t fix it…
Now the Stream is back and I hope everything is set and stable for the Saturday and the Big Bad Bass BBQ!
To ease your time until Saturday, here’s the mix from Broods from last Monday…

Steppas Choice 79: Broods & C4TR
Broadcasted on the 6. July 2009
I did a little edit of it, ‘cause the record was split up in different files with bits missing and gaps in it so I mashed and clashed them together and added some little retarded bits… if you would like to try this, feel free to download it:

Zenit presents The Yard
Woke up in the morning, a couple of days after my return from Kenya, went to town and saw this

As a regular reader of this blog you probably know that I always get very thrilled if I see something on rolling steel. The one who tried this one was quiet unlucky… hope he saw the next morning not through bars.
Two days after I took this picture I saw a next one… once again unfinished and… I think… from the same person. Once again I hope he’s still running around.

This is also a good occasion to point out an excellent mix brought to you by the Radio Dadio Crew Podcast. Broadcasted: 2.2.2009
Another wicked one with the Unreleased Kollektive represented by Slass & Kolt’. Absolutely deep vibing and a proper low down skank out this one!
My personal favourite moment in the Show is when Kolt’ dropped for the first time Broods newest masterpiece called “The comet” (Check: 43min 25 sec). And oh my gosh… what a low down bass hefty bleeping sick monster! My Number One out of Broods Tunes!
I don’t know if this track is gonna be released in any form at this moment. But if you want to support Broods visit this site: Broods on Digital Tunes
If you want to get hold of “The Comet” you have to try to contact him over the Unreleased Kollektiv Homepage.

In this show I got a crash course in French by a friend of Kolt’ and I learned that you can survive with the knowledge of the following phrase “Oui, Oui, No No”. Well I won’t try it… does it also describe the general more relaxed mood of our French speaking friends?

Anyway download the mix and don’t watch my lousy French nor my drunken English. Just enjoy another deep skanking Monday Night Madness Steppas Choice Show! And visit the essential Linkage for this show!
Enjoy!

Steppas Choice 59: Elusive Bastard & C4TR

Seems too me that we started the show with some technical difficulties… one of the Servers, to be precise the one where the MP3-Stream is handled over is not working right or even kicked the bucket (http://relay.radio.ethz.ch:8123/index.html reports server is currently down). Thanks for Unfinished and Deadbybeats for troubleshooting and informing us at the studio through the shoutbox! Highly Appreciated!
As an info for all my Steppas reading this: if you have troubles listening the show try to download the VLC Player and click on the .ogg Icon on the radioradius.ch page to listen to the show… the MP3 Server is not on dutty! (Although I just checked it and it was working for me… strange…)

The Elusive Bastard was upon the decks for this one and brought some serious dubz from our eastern neighbour. Got to say there’s something going on in Austria! I will give you here a short list of those tracks I remember to be played by the Elusive Bastard
DFRNT - The next step (El Rakkas Remix) (Forthcoming Echodub)
Simon/Off - Dread Control
Simon/Off - New Hope
Simon/Off - Mr. Kirks Nightmare
Simon/Off - Exit Space
El Rakkas - Looking For Love In Several Wrong Places (Forthcoming Dubsquare Records)
Big up these dubheads! Some absolutely wicked tuneage! My favourite: Mr. Kirks Nightmare – oh my gosh … got to ask Simon/Off for this!
Check El Rakkas on MySpace

Tales from LDN
LDN ina flu state

As so often I got sick with the start of my holiday… lucky me that the spirit of LDN is still touching me every time I got there. It’ s like an addiction to sock up LDN overall experience like a roast socking up the gravy. So as long as I was running through the city from record store to record store and from bookstore to some wired stores I was feeling fine. Especially when walking down Oxford Street and looking into a side street and seeing right behind a Royal Mail Distribution Centre on this huge wall one of my favourite Banksy Pieces… gosh was I excited!

But problems started in the hotel room. I was really feeling sick. Body temperature wise it was hopping around between cold and warm, freezing and sweating. Got a head like a giant after a heavy bank holyday weekender with no sleep and heavy drinking experience.

Sunday Night >> FWD
Would I make it? Into the next pharmacy got me that funky day and night nurse and… yes we did go and it was pure vibes.
D-Bridge was playing some nice low down subby soulful tunes, which will be released sometime next year probably on his own imprint Exit Recordings. Absolutely meditation styleizm.
Martyn, who was there to launch his new LP, was going right through some of his biggest hits. Predict: Very danceable and minimalist with massive Bass.
SP:MC, who was hosting D-Bridge’s and Martyn’s Set was doing his ting the way I like it… essential and in the right momrnt; not too much not too little
Kode9 and Spaceape, I’m very ashamed of, I missed completely… fever has taken me…

Plastic People was crowded, too crowded. The usual curtain was a way and the room was smashing full from front to back! I’m telling you as we went it was nearly impossible to get to the door, we had to squeeze trough a wall of human bodys mostly standing ‘cause you couldn’t dance because of the masses of people that where in there… but still it was much peace fuller than the last Dubstep Upfront Party at LeZoo…
Which reminds me of … don’t miss this one… I’m probably not gonna make it… still in the flu man mode…

One usefull information for the seekers of the freshest vinyl:
Uptown Records in D’Arblay Street doesn’t exist anymore… but no worries it isn’t completely gone. It’s now located in Lexington Street a bit further south but still in Soho.
I found there some rare Grime Vinyls, some hot stepping White Labels and good T-Shirts and the staff there is also outstanding… hope that Logan Sama get back to me concerning my request from the shop! Defo a place not to miss on your LDN Trip.
Spent the whole Monday and Tuesday in Bed which is a bloody shame when being in London but simply couldn’t make it out of bed…
Quiet strange coincident: A year ago on the weekend I left LDN to go back to good ol’ Switzerland the Camden Market burned down and caused a massive traffic jam on the streets of LDN and on the Tube System. This time it was some kind of office complex with the same aftermath…
Oh gosh… bloody flu… I’m on my way back to bed…
Take care of yourself!
May the Bass be with you!
